Place Governance Masterclass: From Proactive Placemaking to Place-led Development

Ethan Kent
Co-Director, PlacemakingX
Senior Fellow, Project for Public Spaces, USA

Ethan has worked with dozens of Australian councils, of all sizes, to grow their placemaking and place governance capacity. Ethan will share how you can start from wherever you are to grow, and transform your organisational capacity and culture around place. You will come away with many placemaking tools, steps for leading a placemaking campaign, and inspiration to get others on board.

The masterclass will also cover how a place-led approach can reinvent, and more systemically address, often siloed efforts around mobility, tourism, sustainability, immigrant integration, indigenous communities, the arts, and economic development. You will learn how to apply placemaking in all kinds of public spaces, including parks, streets, squares, waterfronts, public markets, main streets and civic buildings.

You will learn:

  • So how do you effectively build on existing place making initiatives?
  • How do they evaluate what’s working, what’s not and make changes quickly if needed?
  • When should local government get out of the way
  • How do councils help build capacity and set up the infrastructure to empower organic transformation
  • What are the latest scalable and low-cost strategies for bringing local spaces to life, starting with the current resources you have right now.
  • Tried and true placemaking tools like the Place Game and the Power of 10+.
Items included: overview presentation + interactive discussions + practical and on-the-ground tools to work on their own local examples with Ethan

Audience: For experienced place makers looking for more ideas/improvement on existing place making plans as well as beginners who want a deeper understanding of best practice placemaking
