Magnetic Island Sustainability Weekend Tour

8:45am Saturday 26 October - Sunday 27 October 2019 (finish time optional)

An Urban Coral Reef and Centre of Living: Magnetic Island

We will embark on an expedition to a solar suburb in the middle of the world’s largest solar city – the Great Barrier Reef, an island ‘held hostage’ because there’s no escaping conservation when you are surrounded by little coral reefs in the middle of the big reef that most people think is a barrier.

After we dock into the connection point for visitors to the island, we will discover how people have learned from nature’s lessons to redesign and reconnect waterways to benefit the community and the environment.

We then travel to the outermost suburbs of a tropical island where living natural villages build their homes to adapt to harsh, chaotic and sheltered environments.

We then head to a place where all of the homes and businesses get connected in way that not only helps to protect the reefs by recycling water, yet also creates a dry rainforest for community use. Throughout the island adventure, you may see our ‘urban coral reefs’ springing up all over the island, and they are not even in the sea.

The island and community itself, is like an ‘island economy’ in its own right and is situated in a naturally sensitive world heritage area – positioned right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and most of the island is National Park. This means that community development and business activities can become challenges.

At the same time, we have learnt many local lessons from the community such as ecological waterway management, wastewater recycling, building and development design as well as energy management. This work has long proved to become a world-class exemplar to share with other cities and communities. The Magnetic Island Solar Suburb formed part of the Townsville Solar City project and led to the deferral of an expensive under sea power cable by more than 10 years and potentially forever.

This is an island suburb of Townsville where the tension of a tropical laid back paradise is juxtaposed with it being a vibrant urban residential centre and holiday destination.

Delegates will see:
  • A big harbor for a small creek – the Nelly Bay Harbour and arrival point for the island
  • Gustav Creek – learning from the best of people and nature
  • Each bay a village … an urban getaway from Townsville
  • Building and Commerce – where do the costs go and where does my business go
  • The tension of an island paradise in an urban environment
